Arctic Research Bursaries

The NERC Arctic Office has been running Arctic Research bursary schemes  since 2017, with funding from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), now Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, and working closely with the relevant Science and Innovation Teams.  These schemes have supported active participation in new joint partnerships between UK-based researchers and  researchers based in Canada (2017 – 2021), Russia (2019) and Greenland (2023-24).

Following the success of the above schemes, four new bursary schemes were announced for 2024/2025.

United Kingdom and Greenland Arctic Bursary Scheme 2024/2025 An opportunity for United Kingdom-based researchers to apply for bursaries ranging from £5,000 to a maximum of £20,000 to support active participation in new joint partnerships with researchers based in Greenland in the 2024-25 season.  Further details are available in the call document and here. United Kingdom and Iceland Arctic Science Partnership Scheme 2024/2025 – An opportunity for researchers based in the United Kingdom and Iceland to make joint applications for bursaries ranging from £5,000 to a maximum of £20,000 to support active participation in new  partnerships in the 2024-25 season. United Kingdom and Japan Arctic Bursary Scheme 2024/2025 – An opportunity for United Kingdom-based researchers to apply for bursaries ranging from £10,000 to a maximum of £50,000 to support active participation in new joint partnerships with researchers based in Japan in the 2024-25 season.  Further details about the scheme are available in the call document and here. Arctic Council Working Groups – UK Engagement Scheme 2024/2025 – An opportunity for researchers based in the United Kingdom to apply for funding to support their practical engagement and involvement with the work of the Arctic Council’s Working Groups and the priorities and initiatives of the Norwegian Chairship (2023-25). The application deadline is 1st March 2024.
