Stories from the field

The NERC Arctic Research Station has supported many projects over the years, supporting a very broad range of science in and around Ny-Ålesund and Kongsfjorden.

Blogs:

In this section, we aim to give a taste of some of the projects that have been supported, with  articles from BIOPOLE, SUNSPEARS and a project that looks at melt effects in snow, collaborating with colleagues from across Europe. We also hear from Kevin Newsham, British Antarctic Survey, the PI for the soil warming experiment ‘REMUS‘,  and Abigail Waring, based within the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) at the University of Leicester has also written an excellent blog about her research up in Ny-Ålesund. In 2025, the Station supported ‘SCOOP – Sources and Cycling Of Organic matter along glacial-proglacial-fjord flow Paths’ which was funded through the EU funded POLARIN project. You can now read the ‘scoop on the project SCOOP‘, led by Dr Eva Doting from the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research.

In July 2023, the Station was very pleased to host the Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage and you can read more about his visit here.

Films:

A short film by Dr Iain Rudkin, BAS Arctic Operations Manager, giving an overview of the NERC Arctic Research Station, highlighting some of the equipment that researchers can use whilst up on Station and some of the locations that can be accessed. This short 3 minute video is  must watch! (January 2026)
