Announcement of Opportunity – Arctic Bursary Schemes for 2024/2025

19th October 2023

We are excited to announce three new bursary schemes, that will run in 2024/2025:

United Kingdom and Greenland Arctic Bursary Scheme 2024/2025

An opportunity for United Kingdom-based researchers to apply for bursaries ranging from £5,000 to a maximum of £20,000 to support active participation in joint partnerships with researchers based in Greenland in the 2024–25 season.

Applications are welcome from across the full range of Arctic environmental, social and cultural research themes, including: cryosphere, atmosphere, social and human, health, marine, and terrestrial research. Successful applications will support and develop lasting and empowering research and collaboration links between UK-based and Greenland-based researchers; to provide access opportunities for UK-based researchers to work with new partners in Greenland; and develop ideas for future international projects.

The scheme is supported by the United Kingdom’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) – working with the Greenlandic Research Council, the UK Science and Innovation Network and the NERC Arctic Office.

United Kingdom and Iceland Arctic Science Partnership Scheme 2024/2025

An opportunity for researchers based in the United Kingdom and Iceland to make joint applications for bursaries ranging from £5,000 to a maximum of £20,000 to support active participation in new science partnerships in the 2024–25 season.

Applications are welcome from across the full range of environmental, geological, innovation, technological and emerging tech, AI, space, health, energy and social research themes. Successful applications will develop lasting and empowering research and collaboration links between UK-based and Iceland-based scientists; provide new access, learning and development opportunities for researchers based in both countries; and develop ideas for future international projects.

The scheme is supported by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (UK), Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Iceland), Rannís – the Icelandic Centre for Research and the NERC Arctic Office.

United Kingdom and Japan Arctic Bursary Scheme 2024/2025

An opportunity for United Kingdom-based researchers to apply for bursaries ranging from £10,000 to a maximum of £50,000 to support active participation in new joint partnerships with researchers based in Japan in the 2024-25 season.

Researchers in the United Kingdom and Japan are well-placed to develop important new Arctic science partnerships that address pressing research questions. These partnerships can support the development of skill- and knowledge-based networks to strengthen researchers’ capability in both communities; generate innovative technical and observational approaches; and create lasting research connections.

The United Kingdom’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, working closely with the Science and Innovation Network in the British Embassy Tokyo and the NERC Arctic Office, is funding a new bursaries scheme to support new UK-Japan Arctic science connections.

The outcomes of the bursaries programme are expected to support and further develop long-lasting research and collaboration links between UK-based and Japan-based researchers; to provide access opportunities for UK-based researchers to work with new partners in Japan; and develop ideas for future international projects.
