Climate
The last remnant of the North Atlantic Drift produces a climate on Spitsbergen’s west coast that is milder than normal at that latitude. Coldest winter month average is −15°C, warmest summer month average is +5°C). The sun is down 28th October to 14th February, showing for the first time above the mountains on the 8th March and midnight sun lasts from 21st April to 21st August. The annual precipitation in Ny-Ålesund is 371mm.
Summer weather in the Ny-Ålesund area is not unlike British winter conditions.
During the spring the temperature can drop to the minus thirties centigrade. Conditions are often windy at all times of year.
